The best sweet and savoury nibbles for Christmas 2024

Who fancies a posh nut? From Fortnums biscuits to fennel salami, Hannah Evans picks her favourite festive treats

We spend a lot of time planning Christmas breakfast, dinner, supper. But what nibbles do you have on the menu for the nameless, unofficial meals that come between? Little bowls of titbits and pickings that require only one hand. I plan for two categories of grazing. The first is aperitivo hour before dinner and consists mostly of cheesy, savoury, beige things with some charcuterie and olives for a bit of balance. Puglia is famous for its wine and goat’s milk cheeses but my favourite export from this part of Italy is taralli, which are perfect for this occasion. I will also be serving Perelló’s addictive salted almonds from Catalonia and juicy stuffed olives from Odysea. After dinner, dessert and the cheese I bring out sweets and chocolates with the coffees (or more cocktails). My favourite by a country mile are the Swiss studded slabs of FrischSchoggi from Läderach, although nothing feels quite as sophisticated as bringing out a little tray of pretty French macarons from Ladurée.
